What is Skype?

Skype is a free telephone service via the internet.

What do I need?

You will need a computer – either laptop or desktop. Desktop computers will also require a webcam. This is an inexpensive “eyeball” type camera that can be added to your personal computer. These are available in stores such as Staples or Wallmart. Many laptops already have the webcam capability built in and no additional devices are needed.

How do I Get Skype?

It’s easy! Just log on to At the top of the page to the far right you will see the words “Join Skype.” Click on that. You will be asked to set up an account. Answer some general questions and then create a “Skype Name” and a “Password” and you are on your way!

What Happens Next?

If you are using a webcam, you will need to plug it into a USB port on your computer. If you are using a laptop, it will already be internally connected.

How do I Call?

You will need to add my name to your “Contacts”. Click on “Contacts” at the bar at the top and a drop down menu will give you the option to “Add contacts” Enter my “Skype Name” which is “lycicero”. When you use Skype for the first time, you will already have one “contact” in your contact list and that is “Test Call”. Click on that and follow the instructions to adjust the volume and picture on your computer. When you are ready to call, click on “lycicero” in your contacts list and click the green “call” button in the box that appears. Voila! You will have placed a your first Skype call!
